Re: NH 648 vs Vermeer Rebel in reply to roscoe, 10-19-2003 20:05:50. The NH648 model is no longer in production. It is now a BR740 with a new look. The NH648 recommends 60 HP min. The Vermeer Rebel 5400 only needs 40 HP.I copied/pasted 1 solution that might address your balers problem. Another possible cause is the net is not being cut cleanly leaving a long tail which the hay or rolls can catch and start wrapping. You need two things to get a good cut on the net. Brake tension on the net and sharp knives.

Fixed all my New Holland no-want-to-start-bale problems. Had a 648 that wouldn't start a bale in dry conditions to save its life. Only thing that really helped was jump out an make a narrow windrow for 20' or so.
