You can put whatever you want as catalyst, as long as there is one =) As far as I know it does not consume the catalyst either. So 250 hydrogen + 1 oxygen will yield 250 deuterium and 1 oxygen. Also when you harvest it from plants, it gives you a temporary jetpack boost, not the actual material. .
